A NEW YEAR DIG ..

Canon Mark Bonney, Treasuer (Tuesday 1st January 2008)

Those who have read the small print in this publication over the past two or three months will know that on 2 January an archaeological dig will begin in the north porch crossing area, and last for the best part of two months. If you’ve missed the small print and trailing of these event – don’t be shocked! The Chapter is planning to install a new font designed by William Pye and the picture ?below shows what it will be like. The dig is being done to ascertain whether the reservoir for the water can match the footprint of the font. If all goes to plan we can insert the reservoir before filling in the ground prior to the new font being installed later in the year, in time for the major liturgical celebration of Salisbury 750 in September. This year of 2008 is full of exciting events as we celebrate 750 years of worship in this amazing Cathedral. Beginning the year with preparations for a truly special focus for the celebration of the sacrament of Holy Baptism is wholly appropriate. For the first time for at least 200 years the place where Baptism is administered will reflect the importance that we attach to it. This is well illustrated by the story of Louis IX of France who signed himself, not ‘Louis IX, king’ but ‘Louis of Poissy’. When asked why this was so he is said to have replied ‘Poissy is the place where I was baptised. I think more of the place where I was baptised than where I was crowned. It is a greater thing to be a child of God than to be the ruler of a Kingdom.’ It is our hope that this place of Baptism will constantly remind us and enable us to enter more deeply into the truth of the words uttered at baptism and spoken again as a coffin is sprinkled with Holy Water - “God has called you by name and made you his own.” And may we also use this place of Baptism as a way to proclaim that same truth to all who come to the Cathedral.
