CANON TREASURER TO VISIT SUDAN - Archived
Issued Friday 1st December 2006Salisbury Cathedral’s Canon Treasurer visits Sudan this December with the Bishop of Sherborne.
The Revd Canon Mark Bonney, Treasurer of Salisbury Cathedral, will join the Bishop of Sherborne, the Rt Revd Tim Thornton, on a familiarisation visit to Sudan from 5th to 19th December as part of the long established link that the Salisbury Diocese has with Sudan.
The group which includes the Bishop of Sherborne, the Canon Treasurer, the Revd Ian Woodward (a member of the Sudan Committee) and Richard Budds (whose role is to obtain good promotional pictures) will be arriving in Khartoum where they will meet Bishop Ezekiel. They will then travel to the diocese of Kadugli where Bishop Andudu will escort the group on visits to Katcha, Kuchi and Katchama as well as spending time in the town of Kadugli. When the group return to Khartoum they will join a service at the cathedral before flying to Juba in the south to meet with Archbishop Joseph and attend the consecration of the new bishop of Mundri. During the trip it is planned to look at the work of schools, clergy/theological training, and clinics which are supported through the Sudan Medical Link.
Speaking about the visit, the Revd Canon Mark Bonney said: “I am very excited about this trip. I have never been to Africa and it will be illuminating, and no doubt challenging, for me to see Christians in a very different cultural setting, and to learn how the gospel is proclaimed and lived. The theological education of the clergy is a subject of considerable concern, and is an area that I, or others, from the diocese may be able to assist with in the future.”
