SALISBURY CATHEDRAL CHOIR BY CANDLELIGHT - Archived

Issued Tuesday 24th October 2006

Salisbury Cathedral Choir performs an evening of fantastic choral music by two of England’s greatest twentieth century composers in the Cathedral on Monday 6 November at 7.30pm including Herbert Howell’s deeply personal and heartfelt Requiem and his superb Te Deum.

The words of the Te Deum ‘We praise thee O God’ form the basis of much of the programme. The choir will process into the cathedral whilst singing in Latin a plainsong setting of these words This is followed by the Festival Te Deum, Hymn to the Virgin and Corpus Christi Carol by Benjamin Britten, one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. We are then taken into a more sombre mood with Herbert Howells’ short but poignant Requiem, written in memory of his son, and his magnificent motet Take him, earth, for cherishing which was composed shortly after the assassination of President John F Kennedy. An organ solo by Parry leads us back to an atmosphere of celebration culminating in Howells’ Te Deum written for the choir of King’s College Cambridge.

David Halls, Director of Music, will conduct the concert. ‘This is a great opportunity to hear the entire cathedral choir – boys, girls & men – in concert. The programme is packed full of choral masterpieces and I urge you to come and experience great music in a sublime setting’. The organ solos and accompaniments will be performed by Daniel Cook, Assistant Director of Music, and Tim Ravalde, Organ Scholar.

Tickets: £10.00 (adults) and £5.00 (children), all unreserved, are available at the door on the night. Doors open at 7.00pm.
The concert is in aid of Salisbury Cathedral’s Choral Foundation which supports every aspect of the Cathedral’s music.
