PIANO RECITAL BY CATHEDRAL MUSCIANS - Archived

Issued Monday 25th September 2006

The Cathedral’s musicians give an exciting Piano Recital at 7.30pm on Sunday 15 October playing music for four and six hands on the Cathedral’s new Blüthner concert grand piano.

David Halls (Director of Music), Daniel Cook (Assistant Director of Music), Timothy Ravalde (Organ Scholar) and Timothy Hone (Head of Liturgy & Music) perform a programme of piano duets by Mozart, Fauré, York Bowen and music for six hands by Rachmaninov.

The concert opens with Mozart’s joyous Sonata in B flat . This is followed by a complete performance of Fauré’s hugely popular Dolly Suite. York Bowen’s less known Suite is a fine piece in three movements, two expressive movements full of singing melodies and rich romantic harmonies surrounding a lively virtuosic dance. The concert ends with Two pieces for six hands at one piano by Rachmaninov. These are original works by the composer, and are not arrangements. As Tim Hone remarked, “How often do you get a chance to hear and see a performance of three pianists at one piano?”

There is no charge for admission to this special Piano Recital but there will be a retiring collection in aid of the piano fund.
