CATHEDRAL APPOINTS NEW HEAD VERGER

Salisbury Cathedral has announced the appointment of Chris Simpson as its new Head Verger. Chris joined the team of vergers at the Cathedral in 1998 and has been Acting Head Verger since October 2005, following the departure of Chris Crooks to Canterbury.

Chris took up his first post as a verger at St. Edmundsbury Cathedral, where he had previously been a Chorister and Server. After five years he took a break before joining the team at Salisbury Cathedral, arriving at Easter 1998.

Chris is delighted about the appointment. Speaking about his new role he said. "I came to Salisbury Cathedral in 1998 excited at the prospect of joining a renowned and respected Cathedral. I'm looking forward to taking this next step and continuing to enhance the liturgy of Salisbury Cathedral with the help and support of my colleagues."

Tim Hone, Head of Liturgy and Music, said "Chris has led the Vestry team with quiet efficiency and I'm sure that he can look forward to the support of the whole Cathedral community as he, supported by his wife Kate and the family, takes on this challenging responsibility."

Notes:
A verger assists the clergy in the conduct of public worship, especially in the organisation of processions. Today at Salisbury Cathedral the role involves management of the vestry and responsibility for the day to day care and security of the building.
