The modern Department of "Buildings & Estate" includes not only the traditional Works Department with its masons, carpenters and glaziers, but also the lighting and sound technicians. Based in an area on the southern side of the Cathedral Cloisters it carries out the major repairs and ongoing maintenance required on the Cathedral as well as the work of maintaining many of the essential day to day functions of the Cathedral, buildings within The Close and The Close environment.
Between 1994 and 2000 the Works Department completed the major repair of the tower, spire and west front. Since when the department has been appointed as the main contractor for the major repair programme on the remainder of the cathedral.
