Works Department

The Department proudly believes that it was originally founded to build the Cathedral in 1220 and that it has probably existed in some form or other for over the 750 years. It has retained all the skills employed over the centuries and specialises in masonry, carving and conservation.

The traditional methods handed down over centuries are still employed by fully trained skilled craftsmen and artisans and where necessary mechanisation has been utilised to compliment these skills.

The Cathedral currently employes 10 masons and operates its own apprentice scheme in conjunction with Weymouth College.

Although mainly engaged on the Cathedral's own Major Repair Programme, occasional outside work is undertaken.
