Youth Activities

The Cathedral has two Sunday Clubs for children: Pebbles (for the under 7s), and Rocks (for 7 - 11).

Both groups meet at the Cathedral School before the main 10.30 service in the cathedral for activities and fun every Sunday during term time. Once a month we offer Godly Play. There are children’s communion services in the school chapel once a term, to which parents are very welcome.

Children may be left at the school from 10.15 onwards, though parents are free to stay if they wish, and we encourage this with very young children, and new children until they become accustomed to their Club. Parents of Pebbles are on a rota to help with this age group

Children are then brought over to the Cathedral - a three minute walk - for the actual celebration of communion. Quiet activities are provided in the South Transept for the smaller age group, and the older children are encouraged to re-join their parents.

We are always happy to welcome volunteers to assist in the running of the clubs, and indeed consider parents an essential part of what we do. Leaflets explaining our activities are to be found in the Cathedral at the 10.30 service.

There are great opportunities for the children to participate in the major festivals such as Advent and Christmas - which invariably involves a very popular donkey - and Easter. There are very popular Family services on Christmas Eve and Good Friday.

At the wish of parents and children, the cathedral admits children to communion from the age of 7. From the age of 11 they are encouraged to prepare for confirmation.

We aim to help children grow in their faith, and familiarise them with the cycle of worship and prayer as it is offered in the Cathedral.
